CME on the Run! Nationally Recognized for the Best Continuing Professional Development Program by the College of Family Physicians Canada (article from CFPC) The "CME on the Run!" program, developed by the UBC Division of Continuing Professional Development in collaboration and partnership with the UBC Department of Family Practice has been award the 1st annual Continuing Professional Development Program Award for providing an exceptional learning experience for family physicians through the Mainpro accredited program. 2010 was the first time the CFPC has given a CPD award at the national level, and "CME on the Run" was selected from among more than 50 along applicants. "CME on the Run" is a series of six interactive half-day educational sessions that take place throughout the year. It was originally designed for the busy urban family physician. The sessions address specific family practice learning needs with topics chosen by the physician attendees and attention to full curriculum completion over a 2 to 3 year cycle by the planning committee. The program was initially developed based on data from a large robust CME/CPD needs assessment. A strong and representative educational planning committee has been responsible for the development of the concept, program content, and implementation of this highly successful and well received program. The program has been evaluated and determined to be of great value to practicing family physicians and the most successful new CME program initiated over the past few years by the University of BC Division of Continuing Professional Development (UBC CPD). The key elements of success for this program include focused short topics with clear speaker objectives and an assured minimum one-third time of participant/speaker interaction. Since its inception, the program has been rapidly expanding with increasing numbers of attendees and with participation of physicians from different practice locations throughout BC. Although initially this program was only delivered face to face but is now being delivered by videoconference to 3 other sites with plans for expansion throughout BC. The instructional model incorporates effective CME principles and a novel approach to learning that promotes knowledge uptake in an innovative manner and reduces the barriers to attending for the busy family physician.
