Dr. Kathy Bell | Workshop Overview: This workshop is for physicians & pharmacists who work with dementia patients. This two-hour interactive workshop will be led by a facilitator who is well versed in providing dementia care. The workshop will be delivered to a small group of 10-12 participants in order to allow for dialogue surrounding case management. A light dinner and refreshments will be provided.
The workshop syllabus consists of one case, which spans the continuum of the disease progression. The case covers the following topics: clinical criteria for diagnosing Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), role of medications for Mild Cognitive Impairment management, pharmacotherapy, cholinesterase inhibitors, appropriate treatments for behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, and end of life care.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to: 1. List and assess patient specific clinical criteria required to differentiate and diagnose Mild Cognitive Impairment and dementia. 2. Determine the role of medications in the management of Mild Cognitive Impairment and dementia. 3. Understand when initiation, discontinuation, or switching of cholinesterase inhibitors is appropriate. 4. Develop appropriate assessments and treatment recommendations for delirium and behavioural and psychological symptoms (BPSD) associated with dementia. 5. Discuss the risk benefit ratio of typical and atypical antipsychotic use in the management of dementia.
