Beginning in 2001, the EDE – ED Echo course has been taught over 600 times to over 7000 Canadian physicians. Its use has become the standard of care in large trauma centers, remote settings and in combat units in Afghanistan. The course is unique in that it has continually evolved as the instructor team gained insight into the way beginners learn this skill. Numerous techniques were developed to help the learner acquire a basic understanding of ultrasound image generation and interpretation, making the EDE Course the most effective teaching vehicle for this modality. You may register for either one of these course days on the registration form. At the end of a single day, participants will be able to detect: Pericardial effusions; AAA’s; Intra-abdominal hemorrhage; Intra-uterine pregnancies.

The EDE 2 Course is an advanced emergency ultrasound course that will take the seasoned practitioner to the next level. EDE 2 has been created by a team of over a dozen editors, authors, and translators from across the country. Although it brings you new indications, EDE 2 retains the principles of the original EDE course including chapters and power point presentations that stick to the essentials, an emphasis on learning image generation, and the straightforward and safe incorporation of EDE into clinical practice. Participants receive the book “Point-of-Care Ultrasound for Emergency Physicians”. This is included in the fee and is the course manual. Further information can be found at www.ede2course.com.

SHOCK Course

The Shock Course was designed specifically for the rural health care practitioner. Participants will review the management of the hemodynamically unstable patient and discuss the specific steps that must be taken by each member of the health care team in the workup and treatment of these patients. It is a case-based course that is interactive, with lots of hands-on time practicing with ultrasound, as well as central line insertion and management. Instructors are all rural physicians and nurses with experience in critical care.

Course Description:
When was the last time you put in a chest tube or performed a cricothyrotomy?
Would you like to learn to place central lines more safely using Ultrasound guidance?
The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Procedures course (PEMP) was designed to allow physicians to acquire and review their skills in essential life-saving emergency procedures including:
1. Needle Cricothyrotomy and transtracheal jet ventilation
2. Open Cricothyrotomy
3. Needle Thoracostomy
4. Chest Tube insertion
5. Intraosseous Vascular access
6. Pericardiocentesis
7. Central line Vascular access, landmark technique
8. Ultrasound-guided Central line vascular access
Before the course, the students will have access to web-based learning modules. These online modules will include videos, animations, PowerPoint lectures, and select articles from the literature that demonstrate the cognitive aspects of performing the procedure. Students will complete this self-directed learning at their convenience, before arriving for the one-day hands-on procedure lab.
During the hands-on portion of the course, experienced instructors will demonstrate the procedures and supervise the students as they practice on animal and realistic synthetic models.
Conference Accreditation:
The University of British Columbia Division of Continuing Professional Development (UBC CPD) is fully accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Continuing Medical Education (CACME) to provide study credits for continuing medical education for physicians. As well, the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education of the United States (ACCME) maintains a reciprocity relationship with CACME which the American Medical Association (AMA) recognizes for the purpose of allowing Canadian medical schools the ability to certify activities for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM and to award such credits to eligible physicians. This program has been reviewed and approved by the UBC Division of Continuing Professional Development. UBC CPD designates this educational program as meeting the accreditation criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada for up to 19.0 Mainpro M1 credits. This program also meets the accreditation criteria for a maximum of 19.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM credits toward the American Medical Association Physician’s Recognition Award.
